Essentially a study in light and dark the Broom Series is subtle, minimalist and sophisticated. These paintings are pure white except for a soft toned feathering of foliage. Earlier works in the series had a contrasting diluted tone of raw sienna to form a background. The Broom’s petals protrude like tiny peaks of meringue over the surface interluding the empty space of the background. Light plays an integral part in the viewing of these paintings, often from an angle where the shadows that are created by the three dimensional relief provide contrast and bring the texture to life. Its simplicity is breathtaking.
Being white these paintings are therefore almost impossible to photograph.
